About Us

We are a warm, friendly and successful adult-only central London-based karate club that welcomes students of all abilities

Our mission is to empower every individual to lead a more confident life.

"Shinboku" is short for Karate Shinboku Kai and stands for Karate Friendship Organisation. For us, this means:

  • we are a group of friends

  • who practice karate

  • and, when organised, run a successful karate club

We believe Karate is an excellent martial art, both for its historical form & significance and for its strong applicability to real-life situations we face today. Karate is predominantly a striking art using punching, kicking, knee strikes, elbow strikes and open-hand techniques such as knife-hands, spear-hands, and palm-heel strikes. Historically, and in our modern interpretation of karate, grappling, throws, joint locks, restraints, and vital-point strikes are also taught.

Although founded on history, we believe Karate must retain the essence of what has made it so great and loved, whilst at the same time be fit for the future. It is no surprise that we put a strong emphasis on self-defense and in building strong minded & bodied individuals.

Shinboku has been in existence for over 30 years and has dojos in Elephant & Castle (Home Dojo - everyone) and in London Bridge (we affiliate with KCL Karate Club).

There are numerous weekly training sessions that members can attend and a few specialist lessons with advanced emphasis.

We have regular socials and trips abroad to teach seminars, cultural exchange and to learn from world-renowned masters.

We are on throughout the year, even during the festive holidays.

Why Us

We are very passionate and dedicated in helping our students learn, progress and achieve their goals, while accelerating their fitness, health and confidence.

We are proud of our diversity and inclusion within the club. This is our greatest asset, and it is key to our progress and success. Our students tell us that they feel welcome and empowered to give their best, share ideas and make decisions.

We are excited to welcome new people of all abilities & backgrounds, all year-round.

We go above and beyond by supporting our students outside of training and creating a culture where they feel comfortable in asking questions, at any time.

We have created an informal platform to allow students and instructors to discuss progress, share direct feedback,  and discuss any topic they are unsure of.

Think of Shinboku as a great place for individuals to come and grow into an all-round stronger, fitter and better version of themselves.
